Installing Binding on a Resonator Installing binding on a resonator poses less overall problems that installing it on a banjo neck, especially a 5-string banjo neck with the 5th string hump. That hump causes most of the headaches with installation. Resonators are pretty smooth sailing where binding is concerned. On the side that receives the neck notch you don't have to measure very accurately. As long as you are a little long you are in good shape. Many people, including myself, use Duco cement for the majority of binding work. Other glues can be used but I like the bond I get with this glue. It must set up for at least a full 24 hours, though. A heavy tape dispenser helps by saving a lot of time and effort. Fresh masking tape is used to secure the binding after the binding route is nearly filled with glue and the binding pulled tightly around the resonator. Be sure to double check that the binding is not only pulled tightly around the resonator, but that it is firmly seated in the bottom of the route.
Before gluing the back piece of binding in place, it will have to be cut. To do this, I tape it on one end and pull it into place. I then mark it and cut it a little long. Then, using a razor sharp chisel and a piece of scrap hard wood to support the binding, I carefully slice off a little at a time until the piece fits just right.
After which, I glue and tape the binding into place.
