Shaping the Peghead

peghead by richie dotson

banjo repair

It isn't very attractive yet, but I'll show you how to whip this banjo headstock into shape in no time. As you can see, the peghead overlay is glued into place and the truss rod opening has been completed. Now, the only thing to do is pick the shape you like and figure out the machine head placement you want.  For that, I like using these semi clear plastic templates.  They are available through First Quality Musical Supplies in Louisville, Kentucky. You should request their catalog and view some of their inventory and be sure you let them know Richie said hi.

The template is very exact and if you look closely you may be able to see the pin holes that  locate the center of the tuner holes.  Before we get ahead of ourselves though, lets look more in more detail at the process of shaping this part of the banjo one step at a time.
