Richie Dotson started teaching banjo at the age of 19 and has developed one of the best teaching methods of any instructor in the field.  Some of Richie's teaching partners have included such well-known artists as Bill Evans, Bill Keith, Ron Block,  and now - Jim Mills.

Richie possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of the banjo fingerboard and has over 25 years of professional teaching experience. His earthy, hands-on, and clear approach to teaching banjo will leave you with a firmer understanding of how your instrument's fingerboard as well as the mechanics of the Bluegrass Style of playing work.  Richie logically ties together common threads not used by other teachers to make the banjo much easier to understand than traditional methods.

His natural ability to render seemingly complicated subjects into easy to understand language will open many doors for you on your banjo, giving you a toolbox full of things to use that will help you every day you play the banjo.

Hampton Roads, Virginia and the Outer Banks of North Carolina Banjo Workshop History

Since 2005, when Bill Keith and I taught the first banjo workshop in Frisco, North Carolina, we have been conducting workshops and camps in the area ever since.  We look forward to our first workshop in Hampton, Virginia!

Musical guests and teachers the likes of Bill Evans, Megan Lynch, Bill Keith, Sierra Hull, Tony Trischka, Ron Block and John Lawless have all helped make these camps well worth planning your valuable time off around.

These workshops are well thought out and with plenty of handouts!  There will be materials available for sale by the artists, but unlike some other workshops, this IS NOT a sales pitch.  We provide the materials we teach in order to insure you can remember what you are being taught.

We think you will agree that what you learn here, coupled with the new friends you will make and reunite with upon each revisit, are priceless.  The knowledge, ideas and new directions you will discover through our workshops will last a lifetime.

Thank you,

Richie Dotson
