Hello Friends,
No matter where you are in
life, if you love to listen to Bluegrass Style Banjo and have
always wanted to learn to play, now is always the best time.
Wishing you had taken up this magical instrument long ago or
putting off your dream of playing the banjo will not get you
what you desire, but taking the first step could set you on the
road to a life-long journey of musical satisfaction beyond your
expectations. Choosing the right teacher will help you make the
most of your investment.
My name is Richie Dotson and
I professionally teach Bluegrass Banjo, Guitar and Mandolin. I
have limited openings, and only until I sell my house, which may
take a while in this market. |

CONSIDERING A PROFESSIONAL?
Weighing your options when you are choosing a private instructor
is important. Choosing the right teacher can help you make the
most of your time and money.
A good instructor is able to customize a flexible lesson plan to
meet your individual needs, not just feed you drills and musical
pieces that may not even interest you. Exercises and other
drills that build muscle memory and help form foundational
skills are necessary, but they aren’t the total package. Having
an instructor who is flexible enough to allow you to work with
music you like helps you learn faster and with better retention
than drills and exercises alone.
Recognizing individual
differences and knowing how to find ways to motivate and bring
out the natural talent possessed by students of all ages and
ability levels is a trait you should look for in an instructor.
If this sounds like the type
of person you are looking for to help lead you into the
wonderful world of Bluegrass Banjo, then I would love to be your
Teacher!
MY EXPERIENCE
I began playing banjo in 1976 at the age of 9, and during my
teenage years I spent a great deal of time traveling with
Bluegrass and Gospel bands, playing on local radio and
television shows in Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia and Ohio,
and working part time as a studio musician. I began teaching
banjo at the age of twenty and have had the privilege to lead
workshops and teach with professional musicians like: Bill
Keith, Bill Evans, Ron Block, Sierra Hull, Megan Lynch and
others.
I have the experience, patience and knowledge as well as the
real world performing experience and teaching skills necessary
to become your personal guide into the exciting world that is
Bluegrass Banjo.

MORE DETAILS
Building each new lesson on the back of the last and placing
great emphasis on accuracy and confidence, each student will be
encouraged to develop their new-found skills by engaging other
musicians at or near their own levels during the occasional (and
strictly voluntary) “Student Gathering” sessions. This begins
to build confidence, reinforce the materials learned during the
private lessons, and allows you to swap ideas and make new
musical friends.
Real music is studied using real Bluegrass songs. The highlights
of each lesson are recorded for you to take home and study when
it is convenient. Video cameras or other recording devices are
welcome at each private lesson or gathering and you are
encouraged to participate in the customization of your own
lessons by bringing in music that you like and want to study.
DURATION AND FEES
Lessons are conducted on a weekly basis and at the same
scheduled time each week in order to establish structure and to
help you obtain your musical goals. They are only $20.00 they
last for 30 minutes. The lessons are challenging but build
