Trimming a fingerboard

Copyright 2005 by Richie Dotson, all rights reserved

As simple an idea as it is, I would like to share with you the way I trim the fingerboard on a new fingerboard installation.

It is pretty simple.  The fingerboard is glued into place and allowed to dry as usual.  The excess fingerboard is allowed to hang out over the edge of the neck blank and is cut on the band saw to within 3/8" or so.

The neck is clamped to the work surface and the flush cutting laminate bit is chucked into the router.  As long as I am careful and steady I will get good, clean results with this method and it is the method I prefer at the moment.

That is as easy as it gets.  This reproduction RB-18 Gibson banjo neck with it's compound radius fingerboard is one step closer to ready.

Thank you.
