Replacing a Stubborn 5th String Tuner Removing a 5th string banjo tuning machine that has been glued in or pressed in too hard is sometimes a challenge. This one was a real treat, however. That light colored filler material is epoxy of some sort that has this one bound up very tight. The tuner even has some scaring that indicates that someone in the past has tried to remove it at some point, but had no luck in doing so. The soldering iron is a great tool for this job. It is the same one I use to pull frets. The heating element has been cut and spread apart. This allows the tuner's housing, just like the frets, to be a part of the circuit. This heats it directly. I use a pair of pliers to coax it out after enough heat has been applied. What a mess! |
